The Lighthouse Church
LIGHTSHIP

What is a Lightship?

Many of us have seen lighthouses when we go to the shore. Those tall towers rising high above the land built near the waters edge. They stand patiently waiting to cast out light to warn passing ships of the shoreline dangers and guide them safely into the harbor.

For many years, Lightships haven't been in U.S. waters and unlike many other vessels that set sail for interesting places; the job of a Lightship is to hold its place. They were created to be anchored on waters across America in places where lighthouses could not be built.

Steadfast they were. They held their spots through calm waters and rough storms, never wavering or leaving from that spot, to guide sailors through hazards safely. Their name is painted on each side so that during daylight hours ships could use them to determine their own position.

When other ships might avoid bad weather, The Lightship would cast out their steady beam of light and sound their horn so loud the whole ship shook! Everyone would know when The Lightship was near troubled waters.
